17-09 Qantas Deal

City Brokers Deal with Qantas

17-09 Qantas Deal The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be delivering its residents discounted return local airfares after reaching an agreement with Qantas.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents will receive discounts of 10% on Red E Deal fares and 20-30% off all other fares for return flights from Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Perth.
The landmark agreement, which was brokered by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, will see the City rebate Qantas the Passenger Airport Charge for all Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents who access the discount.
To access the discounts, Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents will need to register as a Qantas Frequent Flyer, which is free, and upload proof of residency, such as a utility bill with their name and address.  The discounts will be capped at four return flights per resident each year, and bookings can be made through a designated portal on the Qantas website and approved local travel agencies.
City CEO John Walker said the City is delighted to be able to reach an agreement with Qantas that resulted in an upfront and substantial discount for return flights to Perth for local residents.
“The City owns the airport and runs it well. At the moment, any profit generated from airport operations go into the City’s general fund, to help keep a lid on our rates. This will continue, but with an exciting new benefit for our residents,” he said.
“We are aware of the total number of local passengers, so we are prepared for the cost of the initiative but it is worth it so local residents can have ongoing access to discounted airfares, even if they’re booking last minute flights.
“The City has actively pursued the Residents Fare because airfares to and from Kalgoorlie-Boulder are always high, and sometimes they are exorbitant. Our residents need to have peace of mind knowing that if they need to travel to Perth at short notice, be it for family reasons, business or to access medical care, they can now get there for a more affordable price.
“Essentially, ratepayers are shareholders in the airport and this initiative will directly benefit them, and all of our residents.  We also understand that since the City has developed this agreement with Qantas, they are now looking at offering the same Resident Fare discount to other regional and remote airports, which is fantastic and we are thrilled to have led the way with this.”
